Creating AI Avatar Videos: My Experience with HeyGen After 20+ Videos

Real humans shift posture, use hand gestures, look at different things. The avatar mostly just... talks. Viewers reported the longer videos felt "monotonous" even when the content was engaging.


My workaround: break long content into 2-3 minute segments with different camera angles, backgrounds, or visual elements between sections.


Emotional Delivery Is Limited


The avatars handle informational, professional content well. But try to convey excitement, humor, concern, or urgency? It falls flat. I created a "launch announcement" video that was supposed to feel exciting and energetic. The avatar delivered it like a news anchor reading a teleprompter — technically correct but emotionally flat.


Background and Setting Limitations


Stock backgrounds are decent but limited. You can upload custom backgrounds, but the avatar compositing sometimes creates visible edges or lighting mismatches. For my product demos, I used screen recordings with a small avatar overlay, which looked more natural than full-body avatar shots.


Pricing Can Add Up

When I was perfecting a 3-minute product demo, I went through 5-6 iterations — burning 15-18 minutes of credits on a single video. Lessons Learned After 20+ Videos


1. Script Quality Matters More Than Avatar Choice


I spent too much time initially picking the "perfect" avatar and not enough time on the script. A well-written, conversational script with a stock avatar outperforms a mediocre script with a custom avatar every time. Write like you're talking to one person, not presenting to an audience.


2. Keep Videos Short


The sweet spot is 60-180 seconds. Under a minute feels rushed; over 3 minutes and the avatar limitations become distracting. If you need longer content, break it into a series.


3. Add B-Roll and Screen Recordings


Don't rely on the avatar alone for the entire video. I get the best results when the avatar introduces a topic, then I cut to screen recordings, diagrams, or other visuals, then cut back to the avatar for transitions and conclusions. This mimics how real presenters use slides and demos.


4. Test With Your Audience First


Before publishing my first client-facing HeyGen video, I shared it with 5 colleagues without telling them it was AI-generated. 3 out of 5 didn't notice. The other 2 said "something seems slightly off but I can't pinpoint what." That was good enough for our use case, but your mileage may vary depending on your audience's expectations.

HeyGen is a genuinely useful tool that solves a real problem: creating professional-looking video content without cameras, studios, or on-screen talent. It's not perfect — the technology has clear limitations around emotional delivery, long-form content, and custom avatar quality. But for short, informational, professional videos? It's remarkably effective and getting better with each update.
